Mentioned as far back as the Doomsday book of 1086, the village of Acton was in earlier times a popular stopping-off point for travellers on the busy road from London to Oxford. In the 17th century, the discovery of mineral springs at Acton Wells created a spa within easy reach of London that flourished for some time, but declined as Bath and Tunbridge Wells became popular. Nowadays Acton is home to a wealth of pubs and curiosity shops that line its long high street, and a bustling nightlife, particularly at weekends when the streets come alive.
